Spirit of hospitality shines at holiday parks’ night of nights

The best holiday parks in Aoteoroa have been honoured in the sector’s premier annual awards, announced at the Holiday Parks Conference in Wellington last week.

Pohara Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park in Golden Bay was named New Zealand’s most hospitable holiday park, taking home the prestigious 2019 Spirit of Hospitality title.

The judges commended the park for its commitment to problem solving and a willingness to go the extra mile for its guests.

“The friendly, relaxed and happy environment we have at Pohara Beach TOP 10 is simply down to the team that works here,” said owner-operator Del Clarke. “They all do a great job of looking after our guests.”

HPNZ chief executive Fergus Brown says the Spirit of Hospitality Award sets the standard for hospitality in the industry.

Brown says manaakitanga – the principle of hospitality, respect and care – is an essential part of delivering an authentic Kiwi holiday park experience and is something park proprietors Del and Brent Clarke consistently exemplify.

“We’ve seen fierce competition in recent years, with an increase in holiday parks keen to demonstrate their ongoing excellence in customer service,” he said.

“Pohara Beach should be extremely proud to take home this year’s award.”

Lake Tekapo Motels and Holiday Park took home the ServiceIQ Holiday Park Visitor Experience award from a strong field of 12 competitors.

Campground manager Andrea Cox said: “We are invested in our staff and strive to constantly upskill and provide the best experience for visitors.

“Our philosophy is simple—nothing is a problem and we promote a family-friendly culture for our staff and guests, always remembering to be kind and helpful.”

Another highlight of the evening was the award for Outstanding Service to the Holiday Park Industry, which went to Carol and Barry Kirkland of Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort for their ongoing dedication to the holiday park sector.

The pair were recognised for their willingness to share ideas with other operators, their work with Taupo District Council to develop freedom camping bylaws and their leadership in adopting new technology.
